Arhuaco Handwoven Wool Mochila - Seiky
About This Mochila:
This authentic Arhuaco Mochila (Tutu Iku) is handwoven from 100% raw, pure wool, carrying the ancestral prayer of Seiky - The Night (The Beginning). This piece is more than a bag; it is a sacred expression of the cosmovision, art, and lineage of one of the world’s most ancient cultures.
When you choose this mochila, you’re carrying centuries of tradition on your shoulder, ancestral knowledge that traces its origins back to the Mayans and Incas. You don’t just hold it; you feel its spirit.
Our mission is to honour the Arhuaco culture by serving as a bridge so their teachings, craftsmanship and worldview can be appreciated by modern society.
By purchasing this bag, you directly support Arhuaco women artisans and their families in Colombia. A percentage of profits goes to community projects that protect their territory, ecology and cultural heritage.
Each mochila is woven by Arhuaco women, known as Wati, from the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, a region recognised as the “Heart of the World.” Their daily life is guided by deep reverence for the Great Mother Earth and their role as spiritual guardians of planetary balance.
Every step of creating a mochila, from gathering raw wool to spinning the Uso (yarn) and weaving each stitch, is a ceremonial process. Each intention, movement and thread carries meaning. To make a mochila is to connect with ancestry, land and the sacred essence of life.
Just as the Great Mother spun the world into being, the woman spins her thoughts, dreams and prayers into her mochila. These bags are living prayers, infused with creation energy.
The geometric patterns on Arhuaco mochilas reflect sacred symbols, the natural landscape, and the tribe’s spiritual beliefs. Their cylindrical shape represents the womb, a vessel of creation, fertility and the feminine force.
Each mochila takes 4–6 months to complete, making every piece a one-of-a-kind, slow-made treasure.
